When does my child need to be evaluated by an Orthodontist?

The American Academy of Orthodontics recommends that children see an orthodontist by age 7, even if there are no problems. That’s because the jaw is still developing and it’s best to catch issues early.  Your pediatric dentist will help you determine when an evaluation by an orthodontist is needed.

Most people think braces are only to make a smile look good.  Actually, while aesthetics are extremely desirable, the health of the bite (the way the top and bottom teeth fit together) and the prevention of crooked and overcrowded teeth are actually more important goals for orthodontic treatment.  An incorrect bite can lead to problems chewing and/or talking. Overcrowded teeth can lead to tooth decay, gum disease and even tooth loss because crooked and overcrowded teeth are difficult to keep clean and free from decay.
